Development & Communications Manager Job Description

Organization Overview

International Women’s House (IWH) is a culturally responsive domestic violence shelter serving women, children, and families impacted by domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. IWH provides emergency shelter, advocacy, crisis intervention, and supportive services that promote safety, healing, long-term stability, and self-sufficiency.

Position Overview

The Development & Communications Manager is responsible for supporting and advancing the organization’s fundraising efforts, donor engagement activities, grant administration, and external communications strategy. This position helps strengthen organizational visibility, sustainability, and community partnerships through coordinated development and communications initiatives that reflect IWH’s mission and impact.

This role works closely with the Executive Director, Finance Director, and leadership team to support fundraising activities, grants management, donor stewardship, public messaging, and strategic communications efforts. The position requires strong organizational skills, initiative, collaboration, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on implementation.

Reports To: Executive Director

Status: Part-Time | Non-Exempt | 20 hours per week

Compensation: $33.65 per hour (Approximately $35,000 annually based on scheduled hours)

 

Primary Responsibilities

Development & Fundraising Support

  • Assist in implementing fundraising strategies that diversify revenue streams, including foundation grants, corporate partnerships, individual giving, sponsorships, special events, and online campaigns.
  • Coordinate and support fundraising events from planning through post-event follow-up and reconciliation.
  • Support leadership and Board fundraising activities as needed.

Grant Writing & Grants Administration

  • Research, draft, and submit grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and funding applications aligned with IWH’s mission and program priorities.
  • Prepare timely and accurate grant reports in coordination with program and finance staff.
  • Maintain grants calendars and assist in tracking deadlines, reporting requirements, and funder communications.
  • Coordinate with the Finance Director to support compliance with grant terms, documentation requirements, and restricted funding processes.
  • Assist with audit preparation related to grants and development documentation.

Donor Database & Revenue Systems Management

  • Help oversee and maintain the donor CRM platform, including data entry, donor segmentation, acknowledgments, and reporting.
  • Monitor online giving platforms and donation tracking systems.
  • Generate development and fundraising reports for leadership and Board review.
  • Ensure timely donor acknowledgments and communications consistent with best practices and compliance standards.

Marketing, Communications & Brand Alignment

  • Assist in developing and implementing communications strategies that support fundraising, outreach, awareness campaigns, and community engagement.
  • Draft and schedule social media content aligned with organizational initiatives, events, and mission-based messaging.
  • Support website updates, annual reports, impact summaries, and promotional materials.
  • Help ensure consistent organizational messaging across communications platforms and public-facing materials.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Participate in leadership and planning meetings related to development, communications, and organizational growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate across departments to gather stories, outcomes, and programmatic information for fundraising and communications purposes.
  • Support community engagement efforts and external partnership development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of organizational operations and mission advancement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public administration, business, social services, or a related field. Masters degree preferred.
  • Relevant professional experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, grant writing, communications, marketing, or community engagement strongly preferred.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to produce persuasive proposals and clear donor communications.
  • Experience with donor databases, CRM systems, social media platforms, or digital fundraising tools preferred.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit operations, grants management, and trauma-informed environments is highly valued.
