About this role

ABOUT MOVEMENT FOR BLACK LIVES

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) is an ecosystem of organizations and individuals creating a shared vision and strategy to win rights, control and resources for Black people. Building on the legacy and strategies of past movements, the Movement for Black Lives has created a broad political home for Black organizers, activists, and their organizations. Our ecosystem is held together by politics of abolition, anti-capitalism and radical Black Queer Feminisms, and a value system that fights for the most marginalized amongst us.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director of Integrated Technology is a leadership role responsible for setting and executing M4BL’s technology strategy – ensuring that our systems and infrastructure actively power our political and advocacy work. Technology at M4BL doesn’t live in a silo; it runs through every function, team and priority of the organization and the Director is the person who owns that integration.

This is not primarily a technical execution role – it is a strategic and relational one. The Director must build trust with a dynamic, distributed staff, translate between technical and non-technical worlds, and hold the big picture while keeping IT operations moving. Equally important is building a culture where data and technology are accessible and useful to everyone, where technology serves the whole mission – and staff, eco-system members and key stakeholders are genuinely equipped to do their best work.

The Director reports to the Managing Director and is a full member of M4BL’s senior leadership team, working closely with other team leads to develop and scale the systems that power M4BL’s political and advocacy work. The Director supervises M4BL’s internal tech team, including the Web Manager, and serves as the primary strategic liaison to M4BL’s external IT infrastructure partner.

WHO THRIVES HERE

M4BL is a movement organization, which means the work looks different from a traditional nonprofit or tech environment. Here’s what that means for this role:

  • Staff move with the moment which means your schedule flexes with the political landscape
  • There’s a lot of people work. The connective tissue of movement organizing – the calls, the follow-up, the relationship-tending, is woven into how we operate. Someone who thrives here understands that technology is as much relational as it is operational
  • Independence is expected. M4BL’s leadership style is collaborative and direct, not directive. You’re expected to assess your environment, build your plan, and drive it
  • The role is national in scope. The Director collaborates with ecosystem members, and external partners in service of shared infrastructure needs – but is not a help desk or capacity builder for individual member organizations
  • Opening to learning matters. Even experienced technology leaders will need to learn how M4BL operates. That willingness is non-negotiable

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Technology Strategy & Organizational Leadership

  • Develop and own M4BL's technology strategy, including long-term planning, roadmap development, and change management
  • Serve as a full strategic partner at the Directors' Table — translating technology needs and risks into organizational decision-making, not just reporting on them
  • Represent M4BL's technology interests at convenings, ecosystem gatherings, and cross-organizational strategy sessions
  • Ensure that technology decisions are grounded in the political work — understanding what M4BL is trying to do in the world and building systems that support it
  • Identify and manage technology-related project interdependencies across teams, including surfacing gaps in follow-through and holding accountability across departments

Team Leadership & Development

  • Directly supervise M4BL's internal tech team, including the Web Manager and Data Integration Lead, with a coaching and capacity-building orientation
  • Model and reinforce that staff can raise issues without fear of judgement or blame
  • Create a team culture of trust, psychological safety, and professional growth — particularly supporting staff who are early in their technology careers
  • Support team members in connecting to the broader movement technology landscape

External IT Partner & Infrastructure Oversight

  • Serve as M4BL's primary strategic liaison to the external IT infrastructure partner — maintaining a clear and functional division of labor
  • The external IT partner holds: device management, help desk, hardware and software configurations, onboarding and offboarding execution, and web infrastructure management
  • The Director holds: strategy, vendor management, policy development, compliance oversight, and decision-making authority on behalf of M4BL
  • Ensure the external IT partner's work aligns with M4BL's needs and standards through regular audits and review of reports
  • Work toward a clearly defined and well-understood relationship that does not require constant negotiation

Security, Compliance & Data Governance

  • Develop and maintain M4BL's technology policies, data governance frameworks, and compliance documentation — with the external IT partner supporting implementation
  • Think strategically about risk at different levels, with a clear understanding that M4BL and its ecosystem operate in a heavily surveilled environment
  • Build and maintain a security culture that is rigorous without being punitive — meeting staff where they are rather than creating workarounds
  • Oversee security training and ensure staff understand relevant risks in plain, accessible language
  • Support the Data Integration Lead in CRM systems management and cross-platform data integrity

Web & Digital Infrastructure

  • Supervise the Web Manager and provide strategic oversight of M4BL's digital platforms, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, security standards, and accessibility requirements
  • Provide oversight on web-related vendor contracts and strategic digital investments
  • Ensure integration across M4BL's digital tools, websites, and data systems

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Ecosystem Support

  • Work closely with other team leads to support new software rollouts, automation improvements, and workflow enhancements
  • Systematize a process of technology coordination that serves M4BL's ecosystem organizations
  • Own IT budget planning, vendor relationship management, and contract negotiations for technology services
  • Ensure technology policies and organizational use standards keep pace with the organization's evolving needs and the broader movement landscape

Note: The Movement for Black Lives is committed to responding flexibly to changing circumstances and priorities which means that the expectations of every position are dynamic. This description reflects the assignment of essential functions but does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Substantial technology leadership experience in movement technology, political organizing, or security-forward nonprofit spaces — with a strong foundation in IT operations or infrastructure, and a career built on bridging technology and people
  • Familiarity with the culture, pace, and values of movement spaces is required — this is not something that can be developed on the job
  • Experience managing external IT vendors or managed service providers, including defining and maintaining clear divisions of labor
  • Strong track record of supervising and developing technology staff, including early-career team members
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate about technology to non-technical audiences — in a way that builds confidence, not dependency
  • Experience developing technology policies in high-trust environments that staff actually follow
  • An understanding of the specific security environment of political organizations — including how to protect staff, data, and the work itself from external threats, and how to build systems that limit exposure without creating a culture of fear
  • Analytical fluency in budgeting, vendor management, and operational planning — able to own an IT budget and make sound resource decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, particularly in a high-stakes political environment
  • Proven ability to build trust quickly and deeply
  • Comfort with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and organizational contexts that are not highly structured
  • Ability to work independently and thrive on a remote team without close oversight

Preferred

  • Experience with Asana or similar project management platforms at an organizational level
  • Familiarity with CRM systems and data governance in an advocacy context
  • Experience working with or within a federated or ecosystem model (i.e., a hub organization supporting affiliated groups)

CORE AND INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Grounded in liberation and transformative justice –  in practice, not just in principle, with deep personal alignment with M4BL's mission and the broader movement for Black liberation and joyful Black life
  • Relational intelligence — the ability to build and hold trust across a diverse, dynamic staff
  • Strategic clarity and follow-through – advances the work at both the day-to-day and longer-term strategic levels with high attention to detail and a “no problem is too big, no question is too small” work ethic
  • Security-minded — understands surveillance risks specific to movement work and can operationalize that awareness without creating fear or rigidity
  • Self-direction — can take organizational vision and translate it into concrete action without waiting for a detailed roadmap
  • Compassion and accountability — holds high standards while creating space for staff to learn, grow, and bring their full selves to the work
  • Adaptability — thrives in a high-trust, flexible environment and understands what that kind of culture actually requires

Salary

$134,000 - $168,000, with full health benefits for employee and dependents, employer-funded retirement plan, remote work stipend, and generous front loaded time off and sick days.

Location

Remote (U.S. – based) | Must have reliable internet access

Reports to: M4BL Managing Director

SCHEDULE

Full-time. M4BL practices a five-day work week, with core hours of operations between 10:00am - 6:00pm ET. M4BL offers genuine flexibility and meaningful time off. It also does consequential work in a high-stakes political moment, which means the pace is real and boundaries between “on” and “off” can blur. The right person for this role understands that paradox and has developed their own grounded relationship to the rhythms and demands of movement work.

LOCATION

This position may be performed from anywhere within the contiguous United States. The role requires approximately ten weeks of travel per year for internal staff gatherings, ecosystem convenings, and external conferences, as well as occasional evening and weekend availability.
